Biosphere 2 was an experiment in developing a self-sustaining, man-made environment. Taking what we know about Biosphere 1 (the earth) they tried to make a smaller version. To be able to live away from earth for long we would likely have to do something similar to what they tried. Living things need energy and produce waste. Whether solid, liquid or gas, these wastes would have to be dealt with. For example, as humans breathe out waste (CO2), plants can take it in. As the plants then produce waste (O2), animals can take it in. The trick is in having the right amount of plants, animals and inorganic matter so that everything is recycled and the needs are met for all of the various living things. They didn't get it perfect but there is a lot to learn from their attempt.
