Two of the focuses of Trip 3 are ecology and the effects of humans on the environment, both of which are introduced here in Cleveland. Zebra Mussels around Cleveland's shore in Lake Erie provide an example of how ecosystems can get out of balance by non-native species. The effects of pollution are explored using incidences which occured on the main river running through Cleveland, the Cuyahoga, as examples. At various times in the 20th century, the river burned due to pollution. Now, the river is an example of how a bad environmental problem can be turned around.
