Douglas County, Kansas is home to a wealth of outdoor environments for experiencing life. Clinton Lake, the Kansas River and the forests that line each are full of trails and opportunites to experience things that exist throughout much of the country. The Baker Wetlands, a square mile of lowlands abutting the Wakarusa River, supports a wide variety of aquatic and other life. The University of Kansas campus holds a variety of plants that wouldn't exist in the area if they weren't planted. It is also the home of the Monarch Watch program, where Monarch butterflies are monitored and studied. The main point of the Douglas County site is to show the life that can be experienced near, and even in, your home. Many insects, spiders, plants and other living things can be found right in your home, yard or at least town.
