Western Forests: Eastern Forests:

Trip 8 is the eastern trip with forests similar to some of the western trips. The Spruce/Fir and Aspen/Birch forests of the north shore of Lake Superior look similar to those found in the Rocky Mountains. This demonstrates that an increase in latitude results in a climate similar to one caused by an increase in elevation at lower latitudes. In other words, whether you go farther north or higher up you experience similar climates.

The northern, or Boreal, forest covers a huge expanse of Canada just before you reach the tundra of the far north. This forest, also known as Taiga, reaches its southern most point at Lake Superior. Trip 8 also has the representative for the White/Red/Jack Pine forest type in the Hiawatha National Forest of upper Michigan.
