Missouri is the eastern forest type representative for Trip 6. This is where we start the experience of seeing the change from east to west across the heartland. Mark Twain National Forest, in the eastern part of the state, is typical of most eastern deciduous forests dominated by oaks and hickories.

Most of the other locations are in the eastern part of the state as well. Onondaga Cave State Park, which borders Mark Twain NF, gives an introduction to cave environments. The St. Louis Zoo and the Butterfly House administered by the Missouri Botanical Gardens are good locations for experiencing animals that are difficult to see or are not found in North America.

In the southwest part of the state, in Springfield, is the Wonders of Wildlife Museum which is the only known museum to display a representative of the order Albuliformes: a bonefish.

Back in St. Louis, the Missouri Botanical Garden itself is a focus in Missouri. They hold a wealth of plants from all parts of the world in indoor and outdoor exhibits. See the Experiencing Life textbook, especially the sections on vascular plants (Tracheophyta, Spermatophyta and Magnoliophyta).
